A prominent merchant — the Richmond Planet described him as “one of the best known colored men in the State” — Hezekiah F. Jonathan owned and operated a fish business at 120 N. 17th Street. He was born to free blacks in Henrico County (his father, Alexander Jonathan, is also buried at East End) on the cusp of the Civil War and married Cora G. Robinson (born ca. 1872, Cincinnati, died 15 Sept. 1934, Washington, D.C.) in 1895. Mr. Jonathan served as vice president of the Mechanics’ Savings Bank until shortly before his sudden death in 1913.
